Its very name came to be associated with speed and sportiness. Introduced in 1963, the GTO was the first muscle car that was primarily advertised as such - a sexy high-performance vehicle that could really fly. Soon, the GTO was given a complete re-design. Stacked headlights, a new hood and dual exhaust pipes behind each of the rear wheels helped make the GTO the most popular muscle car of all. But it was the GTO's power that really caught the public's attention. Two 339-cubic-inch power plants were available. One was a single four-barrel carburetor version that produced an impressive 335 horsepower, and the other was the high-performance Tri-Power version - three double-barreled carburetors with an output of an incredible 360hp. The father of the American muscle car, the "little GTO' would have many imitators, but never an equal.
